Shanghai(2N) – Yangtze River Cruise(4N) – Chongqing(1N) – Xian(2N) – Beijing(5N)
This 16 day tour has been specially designed to take in the very best that China has to offer, with the magnificent Yangtze River Cruise as the main theme. We begin our tour in the cosmopolitan and ultra modern city of Shanghai, a great city, rich in history and culture and renowned for its colourful past.
Today Shanghai is the largest city in China, a dynamic and exciting metropolis with over 17 million inhabitants. It is China’s “showpiece” of the world’s fastest growing economy.
From Shanghai we fly to the city of Yichang to board our first class River Cruiser, and begin an unforgettable 4 day cruise on the mighty Yangtze River, the longest river in Asia, with hundreds of miles of the most spectacular scenery. We will be accommodated in en suite (shower) twin berth cabins. Our cruise ship will take us upstream into this scenic wonderland, with several stops ‘en route’ to visit historical sites, picturesque villages and also to experience the added attraction of the awesome New Gorges Dam. We disembark at the ‘mountain city’ of Chongqing.
Next on our itinerary is the ancient capital of China : Xian, the starting point of the well documented ‘Silk Road’ and the site of the archaeological discovery of the 20th century : the Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. We fly to the Imperial city of Beijing and the modern capital of China, for the last 5 days of the tour, where we visit the most important and spectacular attractions of this wonderful city.
Depart Dublin to Shanghai.
Day 2 Shanghai (–/L/D)
Arrive Shanghai in the morning, where you will be met by our Chinese guide. Visit Yu Yuan Garden and take a stroll along the much acclaimed waterfront district known as The Bund . Stay in the city centre at the excellent Jinjiang Tower Hotel*****(or similar) for 2 nights.
Day 3 Shanghai (B/L/D)
Today we visit Pudong Development Zone. Take a lift to the top of the Oriental Pearl Tower, the landmark of Shanghai, for a breathtaking view of the city. Remainder of the day at leisure.
Day 4 Shanghai/ Yichang (B/L/D)
Fly to Yichang. Time permitting we will take in a city tour of Yichang. After dinner in the evening, we board the cruise ship Yangtze Gold*****(or other ship of the same class), where we begin our wonderful 4 night cruise on the magnificent Yangtze River .
Day 5/6/7 Yangtze Cruise (Full board on the cruise)
As we sail upstream through the spectacular and magnificent Three Gorges of the Yangtze River and through some rural and remote areas of this region, we witness beautiful Chinese classic scenery and everyday riverside life. Places of historical and cultural interest to be visited along the river, have been carefully selected, with ample time for sightseeing ashore.
Day 8 Chongqing (B/L/D)
Arrive at this mountain city in the morning, where we disembark. Full day excursion to the UNESCO world culture heritage site of the ancient Stone Carvings of Dazu. Stay overnight at the Le Meridien Hotel****(or similar).
Day 9 Chongqing/ Xian (B/L/D)
In the morning we go to Chongqing Zoo to see the Pandas in their home province. Afternoon flight to Xian. Visit Xian City Wall before transferring to the Titan Times Hotel****(or similar) for 2 nights.
Day 10 Xian (B/L/D)
Full day programme to include visits to the world renowned site of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the Great Mosque and the nearby Muslim Quarter. Enjoy an evening performance of Tang Dynasty music and dance .
Day 11 Xian/ Beijing (B/L/D)
This morning the group will travel by High Speed Train to Beijing. Visit the Temple of Heaven before transferring to the centrally located excellent Beijing New Otani Hotel***** (or similar) for 5 nights.
Day 12 Beijing (B/L/D)
Full day excursion to one of the great wonders of the world The Great Wall of China at Juyong Pass, and to the Ming Tombs. The group will also be taken to a Cloisonne and a Jade factory. This evening we are guests at a traditional Peking Duck dinner.
Day 13 Beijing (B/L/D)
In the morning we visit Tian An Men Square and the Forbidden City (the former palace of the Emperor). In the afternoon, we explore Beijing’s maze of old city lanes known as Hutongs, visiting a Traditional Tea House with Tea ceremony. Optional evening Acrobatic Show.
Day 14 Beijing (B/L/D)
Today we visit the beautiful and serene Summer Palace. Visit a Pearl store nearby. Remainder of the day at leisure.
Day 15 Beijing (B/–/–)
At leisure. Time to relax or explore more of this great city, take in some last minute shopping, visit the Silk Market, museums, art galleries etc.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for return flights, arriving back in Dublin on the same day.
